Ames Test

The Ames test uses strains of the bacterium Salmonella Typhimurium that carry specific mutations; these strains require histidine for growth. When there are specific mutations to the test strains, they “revert” and can grow and form colonies. The colonies are subsequently counted to estimate the carcinogenic potential. A positive test indicates that the chemical or formulation is mutagenic and may cause cancer. Therefore, the test serves as screen to initially estimate the carcinogenic potential of a compound or mixture.

Lebrun Labs follows the procedure described in OECD 471.
